Nutrition Consults

What 6 senior Chihuahuas taught me about ageing differently:

Recently, I saw six Chihuahua pups for nutrition consults at Pet Labs (™️). All between 11 and 15 years old.

Same breed. Same life stage. All “seniors” (or entering their senior years)

Completely different needs.

- One had a chronic liver condition.
- One was living with tracheal collapse.
- Several had dental tartar affecting how they chew and absorb food.
- One was underfed, while some were obese.
- One was preparing for surgery.
- And some were simply not getting enough quality protein for their stage of life.

This is where most senior care goes wrong.

Ageing is not a category. It's physiology.

There is no such thing as a single diet that fits every older dog.

There is only adjustment - based on what that individual body is doing right now.

Longevity isn’t about switching to a bag that says 7+.

It’s about understanding:
• what has declined
• what is compensating
• what needs support
• and what needs restraint

Six dogs. Same breed. Same life stage. Six completely different strategies.

That’s the difference between feeding for age and feeding for the animal in front of you.

This is the core of my work: healing pets through food™️ to prevent, support, and in some cases help reverse aspects of chronic disease.

And I'm so grateful to my clients who take the time to appreciate this work and share their thoughts with me!

If your senior pet is “doing okay” but you sense that they could be doing a lot better, that’s the right time to reassess.
