Hip dysplasia in dogs : prevention
Let’s talk Hip Dysplasia - and let’s talk about it honestly
Continuing my Hip Dysplasia post as it's my duty to make pet owners aware of prevention
If you missed reading that post it's here Hip Dysplasia : a sustainable approach
Everyone keeps saying hip dysplasia in dogs is “just genetics.”
As a holistic veterinarian, I’m calling bold bluff on that
Sure, genetics can play a role. And yes, inherited gut malabsorption issues may indirectly contribute (I’m still digging deep into that one). But blaming the bones alone? I’m not convinced.
Here’s what we do know:
1. If a dog truly has genetically derived hip dysplasia, they should not be bred.
Some countries already have strict ethical-breeding rules: dogs with confirmed genetic hip issues simply cannot mate.
Why? Because the suffering gets passed directly to the next generation. And honestly, why would we intentionally create a future of pain?
Whether a country has rules to not breed dogs with hip dysplasia or not, let's normalize not breeding such pets for their own good
Now let’s talk about the other cause no one emphasizes enough:
2. Trauma.
Puppies are wild little missiles; hyper, fast, clumsy. Growth plates are open. Joints are vulnerable.
While we can’t bubble-wrap them (I’ve tried; doesn’t work 😉), we can prevent the big injuries:
- Provide flat, stable play areas
- Avoid steep steps and slippery floors
- Keep high-impact activities in check during rapid growth phases
3. Early neutering
Sex hormones control growth plate closure and removing them too early has repeatedly shown to increased risks of hip dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament ruptures and other joint related problems, in large scale studies. This is one of the biggest preventable factors of hip dysplasia
Because here’s the truth:
🌱 Sustainable pet health begins with prevention.
And hip dysplasia is one of those conditions where prevention is not only possible - it’s powerful
Let’s stop accepting an avoidable disease as “normal.”
Let’s raise pets with intention, with knowledge, and with the kind of ethics their future deserves
