Tuna with vegetables wet food for dogs of PAWSOME PORTIONS

It's impressive to see how the Sri Lankan pet food market is heading towards sustainability. I came across another locally manufactured product about which I thought I should review to not criticize but appreciate and give a general idea on where the product stands from a nutrition point of view

Tuna with vegetables wet food of Pawsome Portions by Aayur Life Ceylon

Let's delve into its features to see if the product is really safe and actually worth your investment

The product comes as a wet food in a sealed can and a descriptive label

The front of the label mentions "A complete wet food for dogs." According to global standards the term "complete" is not properly defined but a "completely balanced food" should ideally mean that the particular food provides all the essential nutrients that a dog of a specified age or physiological status needs for a day by consuming the product

After an independent analysis I can conclude that it is not a completely balanced meal for dogs. This can mislead the customers

The food claims to serve dogs but again a question arises - does the product serve adult dogs, puppies or dogs of all ages?

If the product is intended to be a "completely balanced diet" it must specify the age group, activity level or physiological category the product is designed to support

A 100% natural sign is present and I can't deny the claim. Again, this is not a regulated sign but the effort towards sustainability is appreciated!

Ingredient list (taken verbatim):
Sufficient water for processing, tuna fish in by-products, fish and rice and pumpkin

A wet food has a lot of water to maintain the desired consistency and texture. The by-products of tuna processing supposedly heads, bones, fins, viscera and other trimmings may contain in the product as the main sources of protein. Additionally, fish, rice and pumpkin contains in most likely a descending order of quantities respectively

This is a single animal protein diet with an added vegetable which is pumpkin - good job on not forgetting to add atleast one vegetable! Rice has been added as a source of starch for quick energy and probably, also as a filler

The feeding guidelines need a revision. The daily feeding amounts on the label do not tally with the nutrition

I feel that the Tuna and vegetables wet food of PAWSOME PORTIONS has been given much thought to when crafting the product's level of natural-ness. They are on point. Their website says that the product is 100% organic but the accuracy of such terms like "organic" on labels are not accurately regulated in Sri Lanka

The product has been approved by the government authorities as "safe for consumption by animals" . We appreciate the effort to obtain this approval (fun fact: there are more harmful products in the market with the same approval)

The product comes as a sealed can to retain freshness for 3 years or until the can is opened - well done. I'm truly unaware of how the nutrient levels would retain with storage even under sealed conditions but through indirect exposure to sunlight, heat and other energies. Share insights if you have on this

What I love about the product:
1. Contains a single protein - simple and safe
2. An all-natural product
3. Minimally processed product

Areas for improvement:
1. The nutrient quality has space to improve. They do not comply with the standards
2. The label claims need edits and certain label content need to be added
- "complete" : tends to mislead
- serves which group of dogs
- feeding guidelines need to change

3. Ingredient quality should be improved
4. The choice of ingredients can be improved
5. Has potential to improve as an export ready pet food product to several markets

What I don't like about the product:
1. Several claims on the label are misleading and certain other are not scientific

Owned and Made in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

The mission of Aayur Life's PAWSOME PORTIONS products align with our mission at Pet Labs(™️) to heal pets through food(™️); to prevent, cure or support pets with chronic diseases(™️). The same reason why I chose this product for a review

In my opinion Tuna and VEGETABLES wet food by PAWSOME PORTIONS  would be most appropriate as a snack as of now but not as an everyday meal to provide all the required nutrients

I would recommend Tuna and vegetables wet food as a snack or treat for healthy dogs with no underlying disease. If you would like to try out the product, it is available: https://aayur.lk/product/pawesome-portions/

On a side note,

1. Tuna is not tolerated by the majority of dogs in Sri Lanka (from my own clinical experience of 7 years) but there can be individual variations on the level of tolerance

2.This is a one-size-fits-all product for dogs. The product can be used as a snack for some dogs but not for every dog as it is not a personalized diet

If the ingredients of the product are not tolerated by your pet, they have a few more products and I would recommend that you take a close look at their other products before purchase

1. On their website:

2. At several pet stores in Sri Lanka
