Puppy Syrups as Supplements

Using sugar based supplements for puppies should stop

Puppies, due to their small size are unable to take tablets and we as vets make the decision to prescribe syrups as forms of multivitamins, calcium supplements, amino acid supplements to be used on a daily basis. Pet owners also have the freedom to buy such supplements over the counter

Many of these syrups are sugar based to increase acceptance by the dog and as a preservative

The most common form is sorbitol - a sugar alcohol that is used as the base of such puppy syrups (as well as in syrups for human) and as you know extra sugars get accumulated in the liver as fat (fatty liver). Why should we encourage toxifying the liver from a very young age?

I have come to a stage where I am cautious about prescribing vitamins for pets and I try to always provide better meal plans to replace the use of such sugar based multivitamins, calcium supplements etc but I also admit that for clients with cost constraints in using a good diet for their puppies (after discussing with them), I have no option but to prescribe such sugar based products due to the lack of any other suitable products in the market for now

Try to always avoid sugar based supplements if you have the ability to adopt a healthy meal plan for your pet
